Just
because you mean the world to us.

In her short life,
Kristy was the strongest person we ever knew. Nothing ever came easy for
her, if you would ever ask anyone who really knew her to describe her
they would all say one thing in common: that she was a fighter. She
hated to lose. She had to fight for everything from her grades, to
winning games and in the end, her life. She constantly led life with her
game face on. I can truly say that she led her life always helping
others. Throughout the past few years, she was a volunteer at Creedmore
Psychiatric Center where she helped brighten up the patient's day. I can
remember one patient that she often spoke of who would not speak to
anyone. Somehow Kristy was able to open that patient to conversation.
That was Kristy: genuine and sincere, someone for all of us to relate
to. In addition to Creedmore, she also worked for AHRC (Association for
the Help of Retarded Children) where she took them out on the weekends.
Most importantly, though, was the season she spent as a coach for the
St. Francis Dechantal Church volleyball team. She honestly loved each
one of the girls on the team. Even after the season was finished, she
took time to go to their school games and watch them play. The girls
looked up to her as more than a coach but rather as a dear friend. That
was the way she was, always making lasting impressions. However,
throughout the whole ordeal that she was going through she couldn't find
a way to tell them about her illness. She was more concerned with how
upset the girls would be rather than getting sympathy from them. The one
thing, though, which truly identified who Kristy Lyn
Haley
was, is the courage that she
possessed throughout her battle with
melanoma. She never let the disease get the best of her. She always kept
her chin up and accepted anything that life threw at her. Through her
lung surgery and radiation, she continued to show that incredible smile
that she was blessed with. She even showed that smile while we were on
our way to Germany, hoping that we would return cancer-free.
Unfortunately, that wasn't what God had planned for her. In Germany,
despite her increasing pain she was still thankful to the doctors and nurses
for their help. Most importantly, she put all her hopes, dreams and
faith in Padre Pio, that he would make everything O.K. Right up to the
last day, she held his relic and prayed to him in Italian because maybe
he would understand her if she spoke in his language. Although God may
not of given her the gift of life and health, God did manage to give her
a gift of knowing that she was going to die. The night before she died,
she told her mother and boyfriend everything that they already knew:
that she loves them very much and that she is thankful for them being a
big part of her life. Since learning of the news that the melanoma had
returned in August, it had given her a new perspective on life. She
noticed that there are so many people in this world who concern
themselves with such minor issues and take their health, family and life
for granted. Kristy, although you were only with us for a little while,
you will remain in our hearts and souls forever.
